By W. A. Production® | | Music Production

There is one common thing all creative people share – they have to have their own space! With the constant changes happening in the music industry, having your own space is more desirable than ever. And there is a tool for everything which will make it possible to release your own music from the comfort of your home. If you are interested, let’s talk about the things you need to build your own home recording studio.

In case you already own a laptop or a computer, it will be possible to build your own home recording studio for less than $1500. And one more thing, having your own home recording studio will give you the possibility to be creative as much as possible.

A Laptop or A Computer

Having your own laptop or desktop PC makes everything much easier nowadays. Depending on the tools you plan to use you will have to decide whether you are going to use a MAC computer or a Windows powered machine. The good thing is that each of these operating systems has the right tools to get the job done. Of course, you won’t be able to use GarageBand or Logic Pro X on Windows, but there are some great alternatives. So, you will be able to do all your recording and mixing projects.

In case you don’t have a computer choose the one that fits into your budget. However, make sure it has much RAM memory (16GB should be enough) and an SSD disc of a decent size (240 GB minimum). The SSID is 10 times faster than the standard HDD and it will make your computer run much faster than usual.

DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)

The next step after buying the laptop or desktop PC is investing in a DAW or a Digital Audio Workstation. The DAW will allow you to record and mix your own music. There is a number of great DAWs you can choose from, so before you purchase it, you can use their trial versions to check how they fit you. However, it is very important to choose the one which will work on your operating system and also the one which is adequate for the genre of music you plan to produce.

Audio Interface

An audio interface is necessary if you plan to record the audio from your guitar or microphone to your laptop or PC. The quality of your recording and monitoring will greatly depend on the audio interface you are going to buy. So, when choosing the right audio interface, you shouldn’t go for the cheapest one. At the same time, you don’t have to buy the most expensive one because you can easily upgrade your current one once your budget becomes bigger. One of the worst things you can do at the beginning is to try and save some money by buying a cheap audio interface. So, just like with the computer you wouldn’t want to save money on this piece of hardware. These two are basically the two main elements of your home recording studio setup. Also, check whether the audio interface supports solo, duo or quad. The price between these three is significant so most singers and songwriters will go for the duo and those who mix music a lot will go for the quad.

Studio Monitoring Headphones

While most people would recommend buying some good quality monitor speakers, we would recommend investing in some good headphones. The main reason for this is that you will save a good amount of money because you won’t need to invest in acoustic room treatment. Simply do your homework and research and find some good professional studio monitoring headphones.

And once you are about to publish your music make sure to listen to it on a large number of different devices first. You can listen to it on your car speakers, on your high-quality Bluetooth ceiling speakers, cheap PC headphones, TV and so on. Just like many other people will listen to it on many different devices you want to make sure they are listening to your music just like you wanted to.

Professional Dynamic Microphone

The market is flooded with hundreds and thousands of microphones so choosing the right one will be a daunting task. It is important to buy a professional dynamic microphone here because you will have to record everything with it – guitars, vocals and so on. You are going to hear advices that you need several microphones but there is no reason to rush anywhere. We are trying to build something and start making the recordings and mixes as soon as possible. This may sound a bit confusing, but there is time when you will buy a second and third mic if needed. Since you are going to work in a room without an acoustic treatment this type of microphone will do the job perfectly.

A MIDI Keyboard

A midi keyboard is the last but not least important element of your home recording studio. It will help you create the synth or piano parts, the drum parts and so on. It will be good to play some chords or use the drum pads.

At the end, these are the main things you will need to build your home recording studio and make your professional recordings. They guarantee some good sound quality and will give you the freedom to create your music from the comfort of your own home.
